Elephant Toothpaste

I have seen this idea online several times and been dying to try it. I finally tracked down the 20% peroxide at our local Sally Beauty supply. It was only about $4 for a big bottle, so pretty cheap for some fun experiments!

Here's what you need to
  • 16 oz empty plastic bottle
  • 1/2 cup 20-volume hydrogen peroxide (20-volume is 6% solution, purchased from a beauty supply store)
  • Squirt of Dawn dish detergent
  • 3-4 drops of food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon yeast dissolved in approximately 2 tablespoons very warm water
  • Funnel
  • Pan to contain mess!

Stand the bottle up in the center of the cake pan. Put the funnel in the opening. Add 3-4 drops of food coloring to the peroxide and pour the peroxide through the funnel into the bottle. Add the Dawn detergent to the peroxide in the bottle. Pour the yeast mixture into the bottle and quickly remove the funnel.

I don't think ours got as firm as some of the ones I've seen online. It seems like it should stand up more and coil around the bottle a little before falling down, but ours just came out and fell down. I don't know if the mixture was wrong, or if the shape of the bottle would affect this (more narrow mouth, like a coca cola bottle). This was still really cool and the kids enjoyed playing in it when it was done!

Daddy was our helper today!

Having fun! Callie: "Mommy, we're washing our feet for Jesus." Love that girl!

This is what our peroxide looked like. I think I have enough to do this 2 more times.

Swimming and Gymnastics

Callie and Josh have been taking swimming lessons for quite awhile now. Callie started when she was 2.5, and Josh started when he just turned 2. This has been really important for me because knowing how to swim can be life saving. I love the program they are in because the first thing they teach kids to do is to swim back to the side if they fall in. Callie has been in gymnastics for 2 months because they had a special where it was only $50. She has loved every minute of it, but today was her last day. :( Hopefully they will have another special sometime soon! I thought I would share some pics from today. You can click on the youtube button at the bottom of each video to take it to the actual youtube site and you can make it bigger from there if you want to.

Sorry about this next one being sideways! I was trying to hurry and catch her before she started running, and I didn't think about having my camera in the vertical position!

Fun Food Friday: A Heartfelt Lunch

Today's lunch was super easy. I just cut some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with my heart cookie cutter, and added grape tomatoes and applesauce with sprinkles to some heart shaped silicone muffin tins.

Here are the supplies I used for this lunch:

Fun With Water Beads

Today I introduced the kiddos to water beads. These things are totally awesome! They start out as tiny hard balls and when added to water, they expand over the course of several hours. I put these in water last night so they would be ready by this morning. Water beads can be found in the craft section of Walmart, or in any craft store. They are with all the floral stuff.

Developing coordination by pouring.

"These things are so squishy!"

Jamey apparently wanted to practice his photography skills because I found these next pics on my camera. The water beads do look pretty cool, so I thought I'd post them on here.

Here are some links to water beads:

Shaving Cream Paint in the Tub

This is a really easy and fun activity to do during bathtime. You just need some shaving cream and some food coloring. I was all out of everything but blue and yellow in my regular food coloring. It's a good thing I have a large assortment of cake decorating supplies!

All you need is some shaving cream and food coloring.

Callie painted a rainbow.

Callie made hand prints along the side.

Callie painted a beard. Lol!
