This lunch was pretty simple. I'm sure everyone has seen the snack using bananas and kiwis to make palm trees. One of these days I'll do that for the kids snack. For lunch, I wanted to copy that idea but wanted to use a sandwich and some veggies. I made pb&j sandwiches and cut them into tree trunks. Then I cute up some cucumber and used a can of mandarin oranges for the palm branches. The "grass" is cut up celery. Callie cleaned her plate! Josh ate everything except about half the celery, so I'd say this lunch was a hit!

Painting the Bath Bubbles
For St. Patrick's Day I had painted their bath bubbles a pretty rainbow. Tonight I let the kids have the spray bottles and they painted the bubbles themselves. This was a hit with them, and by the end, they were spraying the paint of themselves! And yes, it does wash off of both kids and tub!
Vowel Review and Reading
Today Josh worked on a review of the letters "A" and "E". I wanted to review the vowels before moving into the rest of the letters. His activities came from the A-Z curriculum from Confessions of a Homeschooler (link in my sidebar).
Callie worked on the second unit of her Ready to Read program. She enjoys the coloring by sight word pages and really likes the word family slides.
Here is a video of Callie reading her "ig" family book for the first time.

Homemade Slime!
Today we made some homemade silly putty. I would really label it more as slime though, because it isn't hard like store bought silly putty. It is really soft and squishy and oozes out between your fingers, which creates tons of sensory fun.
Callie wanted me to video tape her talking about the silly putty, so here it is:
Directions:
2 Parts School Glue
1 Part Liquid Starch
Food coloring if you want it colored.
Mix the glue and food coloring first so it combines better. Mix the glue and starch until you get the desired consistency. If it's too wet, add a little more glue, if it's too stringy, add a little more starch. It did take awhile to get it to mix up right, and the longer it sits, the dryer it will get.
The supplies you need. I found the liquid starch at Wal-Mart. |
Pouring in the glue. |
There is still a lot of liquid in the bottom. I had to add some more glue at this point. |
Still pretty wet. |

Fun Food Friday: Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Sorry I haven't posted any pictures this week. It's been a very busy week. We were doing a rainbow theme for the few activities that we did do, so I thought I'd do a rainbow for our lunch today. I hate having to cute a sandwich free hand because it never turns out the way I envision it. Knowing I wanted to do a cloud and rainbow, I had ordered a cloud cookie cutter on Monday, hoping it would be here by today. The time came for the sandwich to be cut, and the mail hadn't come yet, so I unfortunately had to free hand it. Just as the kids were biting into the sandwich, the mail came, and with it my cookie cutter! Oh-well. Now I have a cute cloud cookie cutter to use another time.

St. Patty's Rainbow Bath
I was trying to figure out what to do for the kids to make their bath fun on St. Patrick's Day. I was thinking about just dying the water green, but I've done that before. I wanted something new. I was talking with my friend about it and she said she had seen on Pinterest where the bath was a rainbow. I thought that would be fun, so I started thinking about how to do that. I decided that I would make a bubble bath and just paint the bubbles with my liquid watercolors. I finally found the original idea here, and that was exactly what she did. I loved how she added the treasure hunt in, so I did that also. I dumped plastic coins, shamrocks, and glass gems in the bottom before filling the tub up with water. In Callie's words: "This is AWESOME!!!"
Our rainbow bath with pots to collect the treasure in. |
They were just a little excited! |
Callie tried to pick each color and put it on her head and said, "Look, I've got a rainbow on my head!" |
Callie diving for treasure. She asked for goggles so she could see under the water. |

Our St. Patrick's Celebration
We celebrated St. Patrick's Day today since tomorrow is our Sabbath. We started off with a breakfast of rainbow pancakes and green soy milk.
Then after our normal Friday morning cleaning, we headed out to our classroom for some calendar time, sensory bin, and playdough fun.
We came back in and Callie went to room time while I worked with Josh during school time. The printables came from here, here and here.
After Josh's school time, we had lunch, which of course was St. Patty's themed! Check out the post right below this one for the pic.
Here is a little concert that Josh would like to give you:
To top everything off, we had a green feast tonight! We had pesto pasta, steamed zucchini, roasted asparagus and broccoli, kale and avocado salad, and a green fruit salad with grapes, kiwi, and honeydew. It was all delicious. Callie made the kale salad herself and she ate a ton of it before we sat down. She and Josh were chowing down on the salad and saying it was delicious, but when we sat down to eat, neither one of them ate it off their plates. Oh-well. At least they ate some. Both my kids are pretty good eaters, so I can't complain!

The treat I made them for after lunch. For how wonderful these smell, they don't really taste that great. The kiddos ate the chocolate coin and left the rest. |
